It was only a month ago that we were discussing ways to curb deadly motorcycle accidents in Tennessee, but it’s a subject worth revisiting. As we move into Spring we’re going to see more and more motorcycles on the road as riders take the opportunity to enjoy the warmer weather and save on gas. But with more bikes comes a greater chance for accidents, and accidents on motorcycles often leave riders injured or take their life altogether.
Over the weekend a Knoxville rider lost his life on Interstate 75. Saturday afternoon the man’s motorcycle was hit from behind by a car. He lost control of his bike and fell to the ground where he was run over by the vehicle behind him – he was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s rare for a motorcycle to get hit from behind, which raises the questions: What happened and what could have been done to prevent it?
An investigation into the deadly wreck will eventually place responsibility, but if it shares similarities with past accidents carelessness may have played a part. The most common reason for motorcycle wrecks is that other motorists failed to see the rider before the accident.
There are multiple things a rider can do to try and make themselves seen. Using hand signals, wearing bright or reflective clothing, and avoiding vehicle’s blind spots are all suggested. It’s also crucial that all your equipment like mirrors, lights and brakes are working properly. Some experts have even gone as far as to say that bikers should avoid highways altogether when traffic is congested with larger vehicles.
Ultimately, there’s not much a rider can do to protect themselves if the other motorists around them aren’t paying attention. This is why it’s so important to always be vigilant for motorcycles when you’re out driving.
