“Really just in shock of how sudden it was. It came out of nowhere. Right when it hit, I just heard a big bang and literally my first instinct there’s a bomb going off.” An employee of the Tomato Head restaurant in Knoxville was describing an unbelievable accident that occurred at the business last week. The young man was standing near the register when a runaway car smashed through the wall and into the building.
The young man and the rest of the employees managed to avoid being seriously injured, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case for one of the customers. A middle school principal was checking out at the register when the accident occurred. Tragically, the crash happened without warning, and she wasn’t able to get out of the way of the out-of-control vehicle. She lost her life in the wreck.
The principal is remembered by her friends and family, as well as everyone at the school where she had dedicated her life to educating children. According to the assistant principal, “She loved the kids, she loved the staff, everybody loved her, she was a wonderful person.”
The Tomato Head attempted to recover quickly from the massive wreck. Once they were able to reopen, they pledged part of their sales to create a memorial for the woman. The restaurant’s employees as well as friends and family of the principal also held a candlelight vigil outside the restaurant in her honor.
Less is known about what caused the driver to lose control of his car or what, if any, charges he will face. It has been reported that the man suffered from multiple sclerosis and complications from that disorder may have played a part.
