The Tennessee Department of Transportation recently reported that three of the top 10 most dangerous portions of Interstate 24 are in downtown Chattanooga.
These stretches of road have been highlighted because a motorist’s chances of being involved in an accident while on them are more than twice the state average, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
As Chattanooga car accident lawyers, we naturally took an interest in this story. We focus our practice on helping people who have been hurt in auto accidents (usually through the fault of “the other guy”), so keeping tabs on news items like this is important.
One of these dangerous places is between South Moore Road and Belvoir Avenue and the other two are just west of Missionary Ridge. All three stretches are notorious in Chattanooga for being sites for rear-end and other collisions.
TnDOT released the information as part of an ongoing study as to what repairs need to be made to I-24, which was constructed in the 1960s.
Now, just because a given portion of road is known to be dangerous does not absolve individual drivers of fault if they cause an accident. All motorists have a duty to drive safely, attentively and soberly. If they breach those responsibilities, they may be held liable for their lapses in judgment.
