Prescription Drugs And Alcohol Are A Recipe For A Serious Accident

In Blog by The Insiders

When a driver is impaired an accident is never far away. While impairment might be most commonly associated with drinking too much, as injury lawyers in Knoxville, we know there are many substances that can make a driver dangerous behind the wheel. Prescription medications can also leave you impaired, and when those drugs are paired with alcohol, you really have a recipe for disaster. That’s what investigators believe may have led to an injury accident last month on Edgemoor Road. A trooper clocked a woman driving 82 mph in a 45 mph zone. She was going fast enough that the officer wasn’t even able to immediately catch up to pull her over, but the reckless driver wasn’t getting away for long. According to the officer, “Before I could catch up with the vehicle, it crashed into a stationary vehicle that was in a turn lane of Highway 170.” It was …

Tow Trucks Stay Busy As Winter Conditions Continue In Tennessee | Knoxville Car Accident Lawyers

In Blog by The Insiders

Weeks of bad weather all across Tennessee have kept kids out of school and even closed down businesses. If you’ve been smart, you’ve done everything you can to avoid getting out on the road. The fewer cars and trucks on icy streets the better. There is one vehicle, however, that is a welcome sight on the roads when you’re stranded by snow and ice – tow trucks. Tow trucks have been staying as busy as ever this winter with some companies towing over a hundred vehicles in under three days alone. According to one local wrecker service: “We worked a couple of tractor trailers that jackknifed. We’ve had cars upside down, over guard rails, and cars in ditches. You name it, we’ll see it before this winter is over with.” The real takeaway from this isn’t that towing companies are busy, but that our roads are extremely dangerous right now. …

In Blog, This N That by The Insiders

A lot of people don’t know what to do or where to go when they need estate planning. At some point, people usually begin to think about what they are going to do with their children and assets in their absence. There are several different aspects to consider when drafting a will, including: a simple will, power of attorney, healthcare decisions, and a living will. Aspects of Estate Planning and Will Jay Kennamer of McMahan Law Firm went over these different parts of a will in this week’s ‘This N That’ on Chattanooga News Channel 9. Who qualifies for a simple will? Pretty much anyone who is of age can go ahead and create a simple will. Often it is young couples with children that begin to think about simple wills. They want to address what would happen in the unfortunate circumstance that a tragedy occurs to both parents. Later …

Knoxville Officer Receives Medal Of Valor For His Actions During Major Car Accident

In Blog by The Insiders

One of our city’s finest received one of the country’s highest honors – proof that the men and women of our police force are willing to go above and beyond in times of crisis.  As accident lawyers in Knoxville, far too often accident stories end in tragedy, but thanks to one courageous officer this one didn’t. A Knoxville police officer has received the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor, the highest national award for valor that is presented to a public safety officer.  Officer Andrew Michael Keith was presented the award by Attorney General Eric Holder and Vice President Joe Biden at a ceremony at the White House earlier this month. His phenomenal act of courage goes back to Interstate 40 in March of 2012. A major accident that involved a semi-truck and Tennessee Highway Patrol car left the trooper’s car in flames with the driver unconscious. Officer Keith literally …

Questions To Ask A Local Personal Injury Law Firm

In Blog, This N That by The Insiders

When you have suffered an injury from an accident, you more than likely have some questions. Attorney Brent Burks appeared on Chattanooga News Channel 9’s ‘This N That’ to answer some questions about the McMahan Law Firm and personal injury cases.  Why is being local so important? The McMahan Law Firm has been in Chattanooga for over 20 years. With 4 lawyers and 20 members on the support staff team, the McMahan Law Firm is locally owned and operated. We go to court and we try cases. If you are someone that has been injured in an accident, then you may want to ask yourself when choosing a lawyer: “Do I want someone who knows this local system, that knows our local judges, that knows our local defense lawyers, or do I want an out-of-state lawyer?” You will get a lot better representation with a local lawyer. What percentage of …

Tennessee School Bus Accidents Often Hurt Students and Drivers Alike

In Blog by The Insiders

There are no accidents more frightening than accidents that involve school buses.  Not only does an increase in the amount of children onboard make the chance of injury greater, but Tennessee school buses aren’t equipped with safety features like seatbelts to protect these kids when an accident does happen. As auto accident lawyers in Knoxville, we saw an unfortunate reminder of the damage a bus accident can cause just last week in Loudon County. Apparently, a woman was driving an SUV on Highway 11 when she crossed the center line and collided head-on with an approaching school bus. Another sad fact about bus and car collisions is that the sheer size and weight of a bus often means a higher chance of a serious injury for the people in the car as well.  In this instance, the women that was driving the SUV actually lost her life in the crash. …

Caregiver Abuse Can Extend To Not Only The Elderly But The Young As Well

In Blog by The Insiders

Every day throughout Tennessee families put trained professionals in care of their loved one. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are among the most common places for this care to be administered, but it can also be done from the patient’s own home. Often when we think about these relationships, we relate it to the elderly, but that’s not always the case either. Young people who are disabled will often need specialized care that their parents might not be able to perform or someone to look over them when their parents are at work. Unfortunately, abuse or neglect can occur while in the care of these professionals. It’s a truly horrible act that can shock even seasoned personal injury lawyers in Knoxville. One such case happened in the state recently when a nanny was arrested on suspicion that she was putting large amounts of salt in a disabled boy’s feeding …

Elderly Judge Allegedly Uses Automobile As A Weapon | Knoxville Auto Accident Lawyers

In Blog by The Insiders

Even when you’re driving safely and taking your time, your automobile can still be incredibly dangerous.  You’re talking about a 4,000 lb piece of machinery capable of reaching high rates of speed.  When someone behind the wheel has bad intentions, you don’t need Knoxville auto accident lawyers to tell you how serious of a situation that is. When a person tries to use their vehicle as a weapon, it’s assault, plain and simple, and that’s exactly what an Oak Ridge city judge is charged with.  The 94-year-old is said to have struck a man with his car last November. The judge is vehemently denying that what he did constituted assault.  Witnesses at the scene paint a very different story, however. They claim that the judge fell down at an Oak Ridge intersection and many came to his aid.  Fearing that he was seriously injured, one of those that responded wanted the …

Tennessee Truck Accident Takes First Life In New Year

In Blog by The Insiders

A year without a fatal Tennessee traffic accident will always be worth striving for. Unfortunately, that’s something that’s only possible in a perfect world and our streets and highways are far from perfect. There is always reason to be hopeful that each year will be better than the year before, and in fact, there has been a downward trend of deadly accidents in our state. Sadly, however, last week saw the first fatal Tennessee truck accident of 2015. A woman was driving along US Route 127 through Darke County when she crossed the center line and collided head-on with a tractor trailer. The wreck took the woman’s life in an instant while the truck driver was able to walk away uninjured. It’s a common consequence when smaller passenger cars run into big trucks. An investigation will take place that will hopefully give some insight into why the woman crossed the …

Knoxville Injury Lawyers Reveal More New Developments In Wake Of Deadly Bus Accident

In Blog by The Insiders

A massive investigation was launched after the double school bus accident in Knoxville took several lives on December 2nd.  Since the accident, new developments have continued to come to light that point to negligence as a potential factor in the deadly wreck.  As injury lawyers in Knoxville, we can only hope that all the details will be revealed so that those affected can get the justice and closure they deserve. In a previous post we already mentioned that the driver of the bus that swerved across the median did not have the appropriate license to be operating a school bus on his own. The Tennessee Highway Patrol has claimed that the permit the man was issued only allowed him to drive a school bus while another bus driver was also on board. In another new development, it’s been released that the driver of the other bus had prescription drugs on …

Knoxville Hunting Accident Prevention Tips

In Blog by The Insiders

One of the most popular recreational activities in Eastern Tennessee is hunting, and we’re right in the middle of hunting season.  Of course, that also means that hunting accidents will once again become an issue.  In fact, just last week in Knoxville a man was accidentally shot by a fellow hunter.  According to the hunter, he was aiming at a moving deer when he unintentionally shot his friend in the leg. Fortunately the injuries weren’t life-threatening, but it does raise a lot of questions about safe hunting.  There are a lot of common causes for hunting accidents. Simple lapses in judgment are the most common causes and can range from mistaking a person for an animal to not looking in front or beyond your target. Other common causes can include being inexperienced and not having enough practice, not following proper firearm safety rules, or even mechanical failures within your firearm …
