Chattanooga Personal Injury Lawyers: Secondary Crashes A Statewide Problem

Chattanooga personal injury lawyers applaud efforts to reduce secondary crashes but realize careless and distracted driving persist.

Traffic accidents have already claimed the lives of 16 people this year in the Chattanooga area. Those fatalities rank among the highest in the state and are expected to rise before the year is over.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the odds of a secondary crash occurring increases by nearly three percent for every minute that a primary accident continues to be a danger to other nearby drivers.  In other words, the longer vehicles involved in an accident remain blocking the roadway, the greater the chances that another crash will occur in that area.

Sometimes these secondary crashes are due to distractions, rubbernecking, driving too fast, etc. Whatever the reason, experts say that as many as 25% of all traffic incidents are secondary, and up to 20% of those result in serious injury or  death. As experienced Chattanooga personal injury lawyers, we’re saddened by these stats and wonder how many traffic deaths could be prevented with more attention paid to the important act of driving.

In a proactive move, Tennessee has taken steps to protect innocent drivers from these types of crashes. Last year, the state launched the “Protect the Queue” campaign with a mission to educate TDOT workers and partnering agencies on ways to quickly clear the roadways following an accident and alert drivers of the slow-moving traffic ahead.

Commissioner John Schroer recently spoke of the campaign’s success at the 2014 Lifesavers Conference, saying TDOT reported secondary accidents were reduced by 20% last year thanks to “Protect the Queue.”

The campaign’s results are encouraging and we at the McMahan Law Firm hope those secondary crash numbers continue to drop. But we cannot lose sight of the fact that these type accidents, like so many others, often stem from negligence on the part of a driver.
