According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a commercial vehicle crashed into a standard size vehicle last Wednesday evening in Manchester. The accident occurred on Interstate 24 westbound in Coffee County, near mile marker 106.

The THP reports that the driver of the 18-wheeler had a medical emergency causing him to swerve into another lane and eventually jack knife his big truck. A passenger vehicle, driven by Candy Character, 41, of Smyrna, attempted to avoid the out of control semi but was unable to. Character’s car was hit by the truck, crashed into a median, and then flipped several times.

The driver of the semi-truck, Ronald Arledge, 50, of Bradyville in Cannon County, died at the scene of the crash. Character was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

I-24 westbound was partially blocked while Manchester emergency crews responded to the deadly accident.

Crashes involving commercial vehicles, like 18-wheelers, cargo vans, buses, and big trucks, can often leave victims with serious injuries. Because of their massive size, combined with high rates of speed, these large trucks and buses cause major damage when something goes wrong. The instances of death in commercial vehicle accidents are also extremely high.
