Autonomous vehicles have become a new trend in our society that could become the future of transportation.
As autonomous vehicles become an increasingly popular idea, it’s imperative to be informed of the potential benefits and risks this type of technology presents. Although this form of technology may appear to have various advantages, it still has the potential to cause accidents on the roadways.

Knoxville Declined Self-Driving Buses
The autonomous vehicle was presented back in June 2016 as a way to transport college students or act as a shuttle to and from parking lots. The company Visit Knoxville invested $20,000 in the Ollie vehicle and planned to launch them for use in the spring of 2018 to take visitors on tours and shuttle people to venues. However, things did not go as planned.
According to the article, Olli’s overall performance was supposed to be evaluated on April 5th in Maryland. Additionally, if the evaluation went well, Ollie would then be tested in Knoxville and possibly begin operating on the streets soon after. However, the Maryland test results were never returned.
Although these new technologies seem to fit our modern-day society that praises convenience, autonomous vehicles have their pros and cons when it comes to the overall safety of passengers and other motorists on the roadways.
The Pros of Self-Driving Buses
Self-driving buses may help with the following:
- Providing reliable transportation to citizens
- Lessening traffic
- Decreasing fatalities
- Reducing the amount of distracted driving on roadways
Some of the cons of self-driving transportation include:
- Not fully developed to handle extreme weather conditions
- Unable to read hand signals such as those from crossing guards or police
- Unable to recognize cyclists that may change lanes
- The loss of automotive repair jobs
Are Self-Driving Buses Truly Safe?
Although autonomous vehicles are beneficial in some ways, they can also be dangerous. Self-driving buses are new technology, and there is no guarantee that these vehicles will reduce collisions on the roadways.
In Las Vegas, Nevada, a self-driving bus was involved in an accident with a truck after being on the road for under two hours.
In an article by The Guardian, Jenny Wong, who was a passenger on the bus when the accident occurred stated, “The shuttle just stayed still. And we were like, it’s going to hit us, it’s going to hit us. And then it hit us. The shuttle didn’t have the ability to move back. The shuttle just stayed still.”
According to the police, the truck driver was held responsible for the accident and was cited for backing up illegally. The accident could have been avoided if the bus would have been able to reverse.
The technology that operates these self-driving buses needs to be improved to increase safety and prevent accidents.
What Can Compensation Cover?
While autonomous vehicles need to be further developed before they are safe for the roads, there are still dangers that drivers face every time they get behind the wheel. Motor vehicle accidents can cause life-altering injuries or death. However, if you sustained injuries caused by the negligent actions of another motorist, you may be eligible to obtain compensation for any injuries and property damage you suffered. Compensation can cover:
The amount of compensation you receive will depend on the various aspects of your case, such as the extent of your injuries and any future medical treatment. In order to determine whether or not you’re eligible for compensation, our team will need to review every aspect of your case. Every case is unique, and results will vary.
