Accutane, also known as isotretinoin, was first prescribed in the 1980’s as an oral treatment for the most severe cases of acne. The drug was recognized early on as a cause of severe birth defects so the United States Food and Drug Administration tightened regulations on the drug for women of child-bearing age. As the numbers of birth defects caused by Accutane were reduced, though, another side effect gained notice.

During the past 20 years, thousands of Accutane patients have developed the devastating symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); specifically Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis, the two most common forms of IBD. Both types of IBD are recognized auto-immune disorders with symptoms that include chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, urgency to have bowel movements, blood in the stool and more. There are no cures for either disease. Some Tennessee patients have found ways to manage their symptoms; others have had to suffer multiple surgeries including removal of their colon.

More than 3,000 lawsuits have already been filed against the makers of Accutane and its generic equivalents Amnesteem, Claravis and Sotret, but proving that Accutane led to the development of your battle with inflammatory bowel disease takes time and experience.
