The United States Food and Drug Administration recently issued a safety announcement regarding the devastating side effects of Topamax, also known as topiramate. Pregnant women who have taken the drug have shown a significantly higher incidence of infants born with the birth defects known as cleft lip and/or cleft palate. This oral deformity develops in the first trimester of pregnancy and keeps the infant’s lip and/or palate from fusing together properly. Upon birth, the defect may be seen as a small notch in the lip or as a groove or gap that runs through the roof of the mouth and the nose typically leading to problems with speech, eating and ear infections.
Children who are born with cleft lip or cleft palate generally recover well after surgery to correct the birth defect.
The Insiders of The McMahan Law Firm want to help you file a claim if you took Topamax and gave birth to a child with this defect.
