Two riders suffered serious injuries in a recent motorcycle accident and had to be airlifted to a local hospital. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the wreck involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck that occurred Oct. 16, near Chattanooga.
Channel 3 News reported that a 43-year-old driver was traveling westbound with a juvenile passenger on Sequoyah Access Road. Abruptly, a 57-year-old man driving an F-150 turned onto the roadway from Hamby Road, causing the wreck. Following the accident, the two motorcycle riders were flown by helicopter to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the F-150 escaped unharmed.
The sheriff’s office has yet to determine whether to file criminal charges against the driver of the F-150.
Such an outcome may be difficult to imagine for the motorcycle accident victims and their families. The possibility that someone could cause serious injury through his apparent negligence and go unpunished, must be galling for bike riders everywhere.
Two motorcycle riders are seriously injured due to one Chattanooga man’s apparent negligence. In motorcycle accident cases, the courts may not hold the negligent party responsible for his actions. Furthermore, those who are actually prosecuted by the criminal courts often receive the minimum punishment. This outcome hardly seems fair, and can often be confusing to victims. Why should a guilty individual escape with little or no punishment, while the victims are left with huge medical bills due to their motorcycle accident injuries?
