Few crimes are as frustrating as hit-and-runs, especially when they take a life. Fatal accidents leave so many questions and when the person responsible runs away, those questions can go unanswered. Ultimately it’s the surviving family that truly suffers because they are robbed of the closure that they deserve.
Tennessee law enforcement wants to make sure that a family gets to see the reckless driver that took their loved one’s life brought to justice. They launched a massive manhunt in search of a driver who caused multiple accidents, injuring two people and taking one life, before they fled the scene.
It happened on eastbound Interstate 24 early Saturday morning near La Vergne. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a vehicle was traveling the wrong way on I-24 when it collided with several other vehicles. Ultimately a man from Chattanooga and woman from Ringold had to be flown to nearby hospitals to be treated for their injuries. But that’s not where the tragedy ends. The wrong way driver also collided head-on with a woman from Chattanooga, killing her in an instant.
The careless driver didn’t wait around for emergency crews to arrive. He quickly fled the scene. Police closed the eastbound lanes for several hours while they launched their investigation. They believe the driver was most likely intoxicated, which would explain both his dangerous driving and fear of getting caught.
A manhunt by Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, La Vergne Police Department, and a Metro Nashville helicopter unfortunately didn’t find the man. The extreme heat kept the helicopter, which hunts suspects with a heat sensor, from getting accurate readings. But there is hope that the man will be found. A photojournalist spotted a man rushing into nearby woods. Now the police’s suspect has a face.
