While many deadly vehicle wrecks involve two or more vehicles crashing into each other, a recent single-car crash demonstrates why it is important to be a cautious driver even when there are not other vehicles around you. The crash, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old boy and injuries to three other people, happened when the driver came to the top of a hill at a high speed. The man lost control of his vehicle and ended up going off the side of the road and crashing. There are several things you should do to ensure a safer driving experience whenever you are on the road.

  • Maintain a speed that allows you to always be in control of your vehicle. While speed limits are a good indicator of how fast you can safely drive on a road, weather conditions and other factors may require you to slow down to maintain control of your vehicle.
  • Anticipate curves and slow down accordingly. Never try to take a turn too sharply, especially if you are pulling a trailer or otherwise have a load that may make cause a rollover risk.
  • Get enough sleep before driving, particularly when driving long distances.
  • Never speed or drive dangerously to try to get a reaction out of your passengers. If you have a teenage child, make sure you discuss the importance of safe driving with your teenager, both as a driver and as a passenger.
  • When driving, make sure your focus is on the road. Driving distractions such as talking on cell phones, texting, eating, and even daydreaming may take your mind and eyes off the road.
