Chattanooga Car Accident Attorneys Unveil the Safest Cars of 2014

Thinking of buying a new car this year? If safety is your primary consideration, perhaps because you have a kid or two, then check out the top safety picks named by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. These vehicles are especially noteworthy because of the tests used by the organization. They demonstrate front, side, rollover and rear crash protection, plus good performance in tests that measure roof strength and head restraint.

“We’ve made it more difficult for manufacturers this year,” says IIHS President Adrian Lund. For the first time, for example, the results of the small overlap front test are included. This tests determine how well a driver survives a collision at 40 miles per hour between a stationary object and a quarter of the front left of the vehicle. Even the U.S. government does not use such a specific test to evaluate the crashworthiness of a car.

All totaled, 39 vehicles earned the safety awards, far less than the 130 who received them in 2013. This year’s winners include eight models that earned no awards in 2013. Honda/Acura boasts the most winners of any manufacturing, with eight models. Only some of the winners are listed here:

  • Small cars: Honda Civic (4-door), Mazda 3, Toyota Prius.

  • Midsize moderately-priced cars: Ford Fusion, Honda Accord (2 and 4 door), Mazda 6, Subaru Legacy, and Subaru Outback

  • Midsize luxury cars: Infiniti Q50, Lincoln MKZ, Volvo S60.

  • Large luxury cars: Acura RLS, Volvo S80.

  • Small SUV: Mazda CS-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester.

  • Midsize SUV: Toyota Highlander.

  • Midsize Luxury SUV: Acura MDS, Mercedes-Benz M-class, Volvo XC60
